History.
Sotogrande came into existence through the joint efforts of Joseph McMicking and Mercedes Zóbel, a couple hailing from the Philippines. They received invaluable support from their two nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zóbel. Their vision was to establish a European counterpart to Palm Beach, located in the continent’s southern region.
Founded in 1962 by a globetrotting entrepreneur called Joe McMicking, Sotogrande has long been one of the top residential developments in the world. The success is the result of McMicking’s vision for a stylish, luxurious residential resort combined with careful development of Sotogrande’s extraordinary location. Going strong for more than 60 years, it looks poised to enjoy another 400, based on its simple formula of a quality of life that is impossible to beat.
In 1962, the McMickings acquired five contiguous farms to craft an opulent residential development along the Mediterranean coast. Over time, the couple meticulously constructed what has become renowned as one of Europe’s most prestigious urbanizations. In May 2006, Sotogrande garnered attention in The Times, being recognized as the region housing the priciest real estate on the continent. The area boasts several man-made lakes and is adorned with five esteemed golf courses, including the renowned Valderrama Golf Club established by Jaime Ortiz-Patiño and the San Roque course. Furthermore, the vibrant and lavish leisure port was successfully finalized in 1988.
