Five top marinas on the Costa del Sol.
With the calm waters of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and its benign climate, the Costa del Sol is a boaters’ paradise. The area is not surprisingly also home to a collection of excellent yacht clubs, which help to ensure the popularity of a pastime that has thousands of people taking to the waves during the boating season.
About Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol stretches along just over 150 kilometres of Málaga province and is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations. The area’s mild climate is the root attraction that makes it possible to enjoy the beaches and a wide variety of outdoor activities year round.
The most popular yachting harbours of Spain are situated at the Costa and are near by the airports of Malaga and Gibraltar. We expanded our long years experience in selling and marketing of luxury real estate to the yachting sector, as many of our clients are proud owners of the most luxury yachts or are interested in selling or buying a yacht.
History.
The Costa del Sol phenomenon began in the 1950s when legendary socialite Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe turned his extensive private home in to the now internationally renowned Marbella Club Hotel. His royal connections helped the hotel to attract a steady stream of noble guests including the Prince of Monaco, Grace Kelly and Maria Callas. From the 1960s a constant flow of actors and rock stars came to the Costa del Sol from Marlon Brando to The Beatles.
This phenomenon continues with stars such as Sean Connery, Antonio Banderas and Kylie Minogue, making the Costa del Sol their exclusive retreat. They are taken with the fact that they can live on the Costa del Sol discreetly, away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi and retreat to the exclusive mountain suburbs behind Marbella and Puerto Banús. All these famous people help to reinforce the perception that the Costa del Sol is a glamorous place to be part of.
The importance of the maritime community to this part of Spain has long been recognised, which is why the Costa del Sol has 11 marinas in all, offering 4,000 berths as well as a host of boating-related services.
Popular Marinas.
The most popular of Málaga’s marinas are those of Marbella’s Puerto Banús and Benalmádena’s Puerto Marina, but there are many others. Here is a brief guide to our top five marinas on the Costa del Sol…
1. Puerto Deportivo José Banús (Puerto Banús)
The port is one of the most famous marinas in Europe, attracting some 4 million visitors a year. Since its inauguration in 1970 it has been a magnet for an affluent international clientele, drawn to the superyachts of billionaire oligarchs, Arab Sheiks and wealthy businessmen, with the trendy waterside bars, restaurants and designer outlets completing the setting for one of Europe’s glamour spots.
2. Puerto Marina (Benalmádena)
With its architecture seemingly inspired by A Thousand and One Nights, this is a marina with a difference—so much so that it has twice been voted best marina in the world. The berths and artificial islands that feature are at the heart of a thriving community, with restaurants and bars surrounding apartments featuring a style whose Indian, Arabic and Andalusian features give a somewhat surreal atmosphere.
3. Puerto Cabopino
This picturesque marina is a firm favourite, bordering as it does one of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol. Situated ten kilometres from Marbella centre, Cabopino is set amongst pine woods on one side and the protected dune system of Las Dunas de Artola on the other. Although small—it has 169 berths—the harbour-side restaurants are highly popular, attracting visitors from far and wide to this pleasantly secluded spot.
4. Puerto Deportivo de Marbella
Set in the heart of the town, Marbella’s own marina appeals to locals and visitors alike, thanks to a friendly family atmosphere, close to sandy beaches, children’s play areas and a trendy promenade that offers a place to see and be seen. With 377 berths, this boating enthusiast’s yacht harbour is bigger than it appears at first.
5. La Duquesa Marina (Manilva)
Another outstanding marina, La Duquesa’s location on the Straits of Gibraltar makes it of particular importance. As in Benalmádena, the architecture—in this case Mediterranean—creates a real village atmosphere dotted with good restaurants specialising in local fish.
Other leisure ports on the Costa del Sol that offer professional facilities for the boating fraternity are: Fuengirola Marina; Puerto Deportivo El Candalo in Málaga city; Marbella’s third marina of La Bajadilla; Puerto Deportivo de Caleta de Vélez to the east of Málaga, Puerto Deportivo de Estepona, a few minutes walk from the historic town; Real Club Mediterráneo de Málaga (Málaga Marina) in the main industrial port.
