The Origins.
Decades of pampering the rich and famous and it all started with one man’s dream. One aristocrat’s caprices shaped the course of Marbella’s history. Upon hearing about the Marbella region, the eccentric and somewhat romantic Marquis Ricardo Soriano fell in love with the concept of a retreat in the sun. He purchased a prime beachfront Finca 4 km west of Marbella old town without setting foot on the land. In 1946 he inspired his cousin, Prince Maximilian, to see the Mediterranean for themselves. The following year, his son, Prince Alfonso, came to purchase a vacation home for the royal family. On this privileged position right on the seafront in Marbella and at the heart of the Golden Mile, the Hotel opened to the public 5 years later with just 20 bedrooms and quickly became popular among European royalty and aristocrats. This emblematic establishment further consolidated this status when Puerto Banús opened in 1970. Later it would become a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and of Relais and Chateaux.

The enterprising prince was inspired by hotels he had been in on his trips around the United States, and he was buoyed by the excitement of his visiting family and friends to turn the finca into a hotel. In 1954, this legendary address with its emblematic palapa and pier welcomed its first guests inside the renovated farmhouse’s main building, which had 20 guest rooms, a dining area, and a bar.
