Marbella is the perfect destination for a contented and comfortable life filled with warmth, relaxation, and joy. Stretching from the western periphery of Marbella town to Puerto Banús, the world-renowned Golden Mile is, in fact, an extension of the N-340 coastal road, which has connected many parts of the Costa del Sol for several decades.
In the 1950s, this small area was brought into the world’s spotlight as one of Europe’s most promising holiday destinations for the affluent and renowned. Since then, its population has grown. During the peak tourist seasons, the population swells, with foreign and Spanish tourists owning second and even third homes here.
Nevertheless, the Golden Mile is more than just a roadway; it is an opulent boulevard adorned with palm trees, parks, and some of the most exquisite mansions in Marbella. This grand thoroughfare boasts iconic landmarks like the Marbella Club and Puente Romano hotels as it winds from Marbella to Puerto Banús.
As the epicentre of Marbella’s chic allure, the Golden Mile offers stunning vistas, with the majestic La Concha Mountain as a picturesque backdrop. Beyond the lavish residences and opulent resorts, visitors can find some of Marbella’s most beautiful beaches and beach clubs. At the same time, the area has also established itself as a premier destination for gourmet dining.

What is known as Marbella’s Golden Mile is actually a stretch of four miles (6.4 km) which begins at the western edge of Marbella city and stretches to Puerto Banús. The area is exclusive and home to some of Marbella’s most luxurious villas and estates with spectacular views of mountain and sea, such as the Palace of King Fahd, as well as some landmark hotels, among them the Melia Don Pepe, the Hotel Marbella Club and the Puente Romano Hotel. The area developed during the tourism boom of the 1960s, where may be found the ruins of the Roman villa by the Rio Verde, and El Ángel, where the land of the old forge works was converted to an agricultural colony, and the Botanical Gardens of El Ángel with gardens of three different styles, dating from the 8th century.
The Golden Mile is divided into two parts by a motorway that runs through it. Along the motorway are strings of business centres, five-star hotels, golf course and other services. The beachside of the motorway is fully developed, while the mountain side is still undergoing development. Urbanisations in the area’s sea side are Alhambra del Mar, La Alcazaba, Las Torres, Los Verdiales, Marbellamar, Marina Marbella, Oasis, Rio Verde and Santa Margarita. On the Mountain side of the motorway, the following urbanisations are currently developing: Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles, Cascada de Camoján, Jardines Colgantes, Marbella Hill Club, El Venero, El Batatal, La Capellania, La Virginia, Carolina, El Vicario, Altos de Salamanca, Casas del Señorio de Marbella, Coto Real, Ancon Sierra.
The Golden Mile should not be confused with the New Golden Mile which is a marketing name given to the area between San Pedro del Alcantara and Estepona.
One home that is not so well hidden and dominates the Golden Mile is the Mar-Mar Palace and its gardens, constructed by the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and modelled on the American White House. The Golden mile can be divided into two parts, separated by the coast running between them. The beach side is home to the Marbella Club Hotel, the Puente Romano hotel and the majority of the mutli-million pound villas, all with expansive private gardens and unrivalled views of the sea. The mountainside of The Golden Mile is still undergoing development, with luxury developments such as Sierra Blanca and Nagüeles offering everything from luxury villas with spectacular mountain and sea views, to luxury apartments with the ultimate in modern technology and design.
